Five Serpent's Teeth. Thrash Metal Evile (UK). When Metallica released their "comeback" album, Death Magnetic in 2008, Evile came highly recommended by a friend who was into bands like Metallica as well, claiming that Evile sounded exactly like Metallica. Despite that, and numerous recommendations to listen to Evile, I kept putting it off since Death Magnetic bore me out easily with the long and almost uninspired sounding tracks. However, with Five Serpent's Teeth (and my recent foray into thrash metal), I decided to finally give Evile a chance and gave it a few good listens.
1. Five Serpent's Teeth. 2. In Dreams of Terror.
According to press reports, the album is conceptually derived from the dreams of Matt Drake and heavily influenced by the passing of the band’s former bassist Mike Alexander. The eye-catching album art is by Gustavo Sazes, who was also responsible for the cover of Nightrage’s new album, among others.
Five Serpent's Teeth" unites the best of two worlds. On the one hand, it scores with metallic robustness. Evile are back with a new album that continues to pave their way down the thrash revivalism road. Not contempt with their past efforts and always pushing forward, the band returns in full force with Five Serpent’s Teeth. There’s been a revivalism of the thrash metal scene in the last few years, with a lot of bands modernizing the late eighties and early nineties sound. Evile are one of such bands, playing what is nowadays known as retro-thrash.
