Shinichi Atobe - Heat Shinichi Atobe is one of techno's enduring enigmas. His first EP, Ship-Scope, was a late-era dub techno masterpiece. It was so good that some thought it was the work of René Löwe, AKA Vainqueur, or some other Chain Reaction associate. Then, for reasons that remain unclear, Atobe released nothing further for 13 years. But few have done so after turning in a record as accomplished as Atobe's debut. With 2014's Butterfly Effect, an album released by Demdike Stare-themselves obsessed with Ship-Scope-the Japanese artist made an improbable comeback. He did so with no fanfare, and still hasn't given a single interview. Unlike many other dub techno producers, who can be formalist to a fault, Atobe vividly reimagined the style. His was an irradiated realm where ticking Geiger-counter percussion and thin, desolate atmospheres offset a faded narcotic glow.

☆ ~ Relatively tolerable album, but flawed too. I don't connected so much with it. 1mo. jimarman0709. 90. Fantastic minimal house. I love it. Best Track: Heat 1.

September 7, 2018 In News. A follow-up to one of our favourite albums of 2017. Deep house enigma Shinichi Atobe has released a new album called Heat through Demdike Stare’s DDS label. Heat is the Japanese producer’s fourth album for the label since he was rediscovered by the duo in 2014. His one and only record prior to that was Ship-Scope, an EP released on the legendary Chain Reaction label in 2001

Great record. Favourite is Heat 4, due to the bassline.

overrated and boring album. am i missing something????

Boomkat emperors new clothes hype in full effect. This guy has done like a couple of decent tunes but way more guff, and it’s sold as some kind of peerlessly authentic take on a purist vision of house music, when it’s actually just really really fucking boring
Cordalas
In all it’s simplicity it’s utterly effective and simply the best house album of 2018. That purple vinyl is the icing on the cake. Superb pressing too.

I have to say, I am not sure about this one. I can indeed almost sense the smells of summer and I like the colours and the purring effects in some of the backgrounds. And even though there is something laidback about it which reflects the warm season, the pattern about most of the tracks seems a bit simple. There are layers behind or below the foregrounds in these repetitive segments, though it seemed as if there was some disparity about this implementation. The apparent fading out of the tracks could be seen as a spontaneous assortment, but it could also be seen as everything being less connected. The generic kind of cymbals in some of the tracks were somewhat of a surprise to me and while there is something unpretentious about them, perhaps bringing back memories of the nineties to some, I think or my first impression is that they should have been reconsidered.

Sleek purple repress available as part of Boomkat's Best of 2018!

Repress no longer available at juno for cheap (support the sharks).Aside: this whole "don't support the sharks" thing is a bit old and wan; at present with the exception of two sellers nobody is trying to make a killing on this title on discogs. I know that people do gouge sometimes, but for better or worse this is a capitalist country and market demands are driving these prices. What exactly about physical music is it that inclines people to think there is something profoundly uncool about making a profit for your ingenuity and forethought. Savvy buyers can choose to ignore the gougers - they don't need to be publicly shamed and called out every time they list something at an inflated price. It is childish. Fwiw I have no horse in this race, I am not defending a host of listings I have available at exorbitant prices (I don't think I am currently listing anything for sale here). When I sell something that is truly rare and long gone I price it accordingly, when something is still available I price it to make my costs back and in accord with the condition. Rant out
Darkraven
The point that you are missing, intentionally or not, in your surrender to an ill thought through market system, all while referring to everyone who voices criticism against it as childish, as if children were something lesser, is that there is no ingenuity and forethought about purchasing physical releases about which a decision was made to release these in limited quantites, to achieve some customer retention, to make it seem to others as if the artists were particularly desirable or who knows why, in order for these to sell out and to then achieve high prices which do not reflect their value.
Dainris
You have rearranged the intent of my comment with your paraphrasing. Fwiw, I bought my own copy at FE: you won't see me selling it at $200.00 any time soon. I set about to comment on the regular and rabid inclination common on discogs whereby every effort associated with making any money beyond and above meager margins is fiercely maligned. I stand by the assertions that a) the behavior of dissing those that seek to make money here is a bit short sighted, and b) it has become a reflexive comment dropped seemingly without much consideration.

Buying a record to resell it for a profit and calling it "ingenuity" is probably the most charitable description I can imagine. some US copies still available at Forced Exposure...
iSlate
Repress available at juno for cheap (don't support the sharks)
Gann
It does not really have to be cheap as in dirt cheap, as someone in the so called chain then probably would have to pay for it, for example in terms of wages or in terms of quality. It should simply be priced reasonably and as a sincere reflection of the value held therein.
Granirad
So Good, So Right 2 is the track of the year for me

Pre orders for black vinyl repress available on boomkat . .

"this material really does just turn up on a CD sent by air mail from Japan to Manchester".Cut from digital? This really does show how pathetic the vinyl market has became!
Sadaron above the Gods
PATHETICIF ITS NOT CUT FROM WAX CYLINDER I’M OUT !
Ddilonyne
Electronic music has been digital since.....digital arrived. Unless your buying Gearbox LPs of old school jazz, recorded to 2 inch tape in 1958, cut on OG Scully lathes, then my friend, you're mainly listening to computer generated/rendered audio, ported through analogue mastering to press to vinyl. Of course you can buy DMM lps too, that are pressed AND cut digitally. Most people have been uploading their pre-masters for over a decade, there's no avoiding the convenience digital brings.

Arcanefist
From DDS: "this material really does just turn up on a CD sent by air mail from Japan to Manchester". Sounds as a nice story for a ghost producer... Good record
Xurad
This some next level shit.. Had me dancing around the living room with goosebumps for the whole duration of the album, saying "damn boy" at regular intervals
Malhala
Not even listened to it yet? love this guys work already - looking forward to it after that review :)

Is it just me or does the EQing seems all over the place on this one? The highs pierce through the mix in an unpleasant way and all of the mids seem really muffled and quiet. The shaker on 'So Good, So Right' are so harsh.
Zulurr
The mix seems clean to me! Real disorientating but it feels like Shinichi Atobe is just mixing different elements at different ears to make it sound numbing! Trying this with a good DAC and I can ear everything and it is clear.
unmasked
Come on man thats why its so good, none of your generic standard herd it lll before sound, surely thats why we like this music no...? Alternatively get your self some proper speakers.
Exellent
I think you're right. It sounds great once you lower the highs and up the mids through a mixer. Otherwise I find it quite fatiguing to listen to.

accoutrements Is it just me or does the EQing seems all over the place on this one? The highs pierce through the mix in an unpleasant way and all of the mids seem really muffled and quiet. The shaker on 'So Good, So Right' are so harsh. Might be in part due to high compression - at least for the digital version, which only has a dynamic range score of 7/14. Can't speak for the vinyl though, so would love to hear other opinions.
Qutalan
What is? Bad mastering? My copy of Ship-Scope sounds great.
Flas
I think it's his thingy . . . . .
Daigami
where was the orange version obtainable. Cant find any information.
Dominator
Orange version was sold on Boomkat. It sold out in a day.
Marirne
Got mine from Boomkat. They had both versions available early on. I believe there is a repress of the black vinyl version in October sometime.
Andromajurus
Indeed, I ordered Thursday evening and they were gone by midnight.
Fawrindhga
It was an exclusive color way available only from Boomkat.
Thetath
On Boomkat as early as Thursday September 6th. I think they went very fast.
